The Diocese of Limerick consists of 60 parishes. Since 1st December 2018 the 60 parishes have been organised into, ‘Pastoral Units’. There are 16 of these units in all. We, the parish of Askeaton-Ballysteen, are in Pastoral Unit 12, along with the parishes of Kilcornan and Kildimo-Pallaskenry.

The inspiration to form Pastoral Units came from the Diocesan Synod of 2016 which, guided by the Holy Spirit, proposed the development of, ‘Team Ministry’. This envisages greater cooperation between the parishes of the unit, along with increased competencies and volunteers at the service of the group of parishes. We are called to act more as, ‘the Church, the People of God’.

Each priest in the unit becomes, ‘co-parish priest’, of all parishes of the unit. Each unit has a Pastoral Council while each parish of the unit has its own pastoral animation group. Each parish will continue to exist with its own structure and finances.

While this new arrangement is due in part to the decrease in the number of priests, it is also inspired by the vision of providing a more prominent role for the lay faithful in the running of parishes, recognising the need for a greater team spirit, or ‘synodality’, between parishes, parishioners and priests.
